Witchcraft Is Political: Then, Now, and Always
Discover how witchcraft has always been political, from ancient witch hunts to modern resistance
Witchcraft Is Political: Then, Now, and Always
Buckle up, because we're about to get real. Like, historically real. Witches have always been a threat—not because we cast spells (though hell yes we do), but because we challenge power. From the burning times to modern activism, witchcraft has been a symbol of rebellion, resistance, and radical self-sovereignty. Those in power have spent centuries trying to control knowledge, silence independent voices, and demonize those who refuse to conform.
And now? History is repeating itself with a vengeance.
The same fear-mongering tactics used in the witch hunts of the past are alive and well today. The attacks on reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ identities, and access to knowledge? Just modern versions of a centuries-old playbook: create an enemy, fuel mass hysteria, and use fear to maintain control. We see right through this bullshit, and we're done playing nice.
To be a witch is to stand against oppression. And to practice witchcraft? That's a radical act of reclaiming power. No compromises. (The Rules of Witchcraft are guidelines AND a revolution.)
The Fear of Powerful Women (Let's Call It What It Is)
Since the dawn of written history (penned largely by men, shocking), powerful women have been feared.
During the European witch trials, those accused of witchcraft were often midwives, healers, and women with knowledge. They knew how to heal with herbs, how to ease pain in childbirth, how to live independently without a man's permission. And for that, they were labeled dangerous. The Malleus Maleficarum, a 15th-century witch-hunting manual (basically the original incel manifesto), outright stated that women were more susceptible to the Devil because of their "insatiable lust" and "weak minds." The audacity is actually impressive.
Sound familiar? Because it should. When the world feels like it's burning around us, it's time to tap into our Witchcraft in Crisis Mode.
Today, we're watching the same fear and suppression play out in 4K HD. Women's autonomy over their own bodies is being stripped away through abortion bans and restrictions on birth control. Books about feminism, sexuality, and social justice are being banned from schools and libraries. Education is under attack because knowledge is power, and those in control are terrified of what an informed, independent population might do.
The message hasn't changed since the witch trials: a woman who knows too much is dangerous. Well, damn right we are.
Emergency Political Protection Magic
Before we dive deeper into this fight, let’s arm ourselves. Here's a quick but powerful shielding spell for when you're facing hostility, negativity, or psychic attacks in your activism:
What You Need:
Black tourmaline or obsidian (if you have it)
Salt
Your fierce witch energy
The Spell:
Ground yourself with three deep breaths
Create a circle of salt around you (or visualize it)
Speak this incantation: "By iron, salt, and witch's will, No harm penetrates, no hate can chill. I shield my power, I guard my light, Protected in magic, standing in might."
Visualize a sphere of protective energy forming around you
Carry your charged stone or keep some salt in your pocket for ongoing protection
Cast this before protests, after heavy social media exposure, or anytime you need magical armor for resistance work. Get more cleansing techniques here.
Witch Hunts Then & Now: Same Shit, Different Century
The Salem Witch Trials. The European Inquisition. The mass executions of supposed witches in Scotland, Germany, and beyond. Strip away the historical costumes, and you'll find the same goal: silence and control.
These weren't just cases of mass hysteria. They were calculated campaigns. The powerful used fear to turn neighbor against neighbor, to make people so terrified of the "witch" among them that they would betray their own. The accused were almost always those who didn't fit the mold—women without husbands, healers, midwives, widows, those who dared to think differently.
And today? The witch hunts are trending on Twitter:
The war on LGBTQ+ rights: Just like the witches of the past were blamed for society's misfortunes, conservatives blame LGBTQ+ people for society's "decline." Laws are being passed that strip away their rights, all while painting them as "dangerous" to children.
The demonization of feminists and activists: Women and nonbinary people who fight for their rights are branded as "radicals," just like accused witches were once said to be in league with the Devil.
The attack on bodily autonomy: Just as midwives were targeted for knowing too much about the body, modern reproductive healthcare is under siege, forcing people to rely on the systems that keep them oppressed.
Every era has its scapegoats—people deemed a threat to the social order simply for existing in their truth. Witch hunts never ended. They just got a makeover.
The Legal System: Where Oppression Gets Its Paperwork
In the 16th and 17th centuries, laws were written to criminalize witchcraft. But these laws weren't based on real crimes—they were based on control. The Witchcraft Act of 1563 in England made it illegal to "consult with spirits," forcing people into trials they could never win.
Fast forward to now, and the legal system is still doing the most:
Reproductive rights are criminalized, forcing people to give birth even in life-threatening situations. Because apparently, bodily autonomy is still too radical a concept.
Anti-trans laws ban healthcare, restricting bodily autonomy under the guise of "protection." (Protection from what? Living authentically? Please.)
Protests are being outlawed, just as outspoken women were once silenced under accusations of sorcery. Different century, same playbook.
In the same way "witchcraft" was once an excuse to burn people at the stake, modern laws are being weaponized to maintain the same patriarchal control. And they really thought we wouldn't notice?
Witchcraft as Resistance: Watch Us Work
But witches don't go down without a fight. Never have, never will.
Witchcraft has always been a tool of the oppressed—a way to reclaim power when all other avenues were closed. Witches were the healers when doctors refused to treat the poor. Witches were the ones whispering knowledge in secret when education was denied. Witches were the ones practicing rituals of strength when the world told them they were powerless.
Ready to turn your magic into direct action? My book "Rituals of Resistance" gives you the exact spells and practices needed to fight back against oppression. Get yours now to claim your power.
Modern Magical Resistance:
We cast spells for protection and justice. The resurgence of activist magic—like Hex the Patriarchy and spellwork for change—proves that witchcraft is a force of resistance. Your laws can't stop our magic.
We reclaim the title of "witch" as an act of defiance. It's no longer an insult—it's a declaration of war against oppression.
We create communities of knowledge and empowerment. Witchcraft isn't just about magic—it's about building a future where no one is burned at the stake again, literally or metaphorically. It’s about Manifesting Your Dreams, Embracing Your Power, and Slaying.
The Revolution Will Be Hexed
Witchcraft is, and has always been, political. Deal with it.
To practice witchcraft is to challenge the systems that seek to control us. To embrace your magic is to reclaim the power that was stolen from those who came before us. We are the witches they could not burn—and we're just getting warmed up.
Now is the time to embrace your magic—whether that's through spells, activism, art, or simply existing as your most authentic self. Because in a world that wants you powerless, being a witch isn't just radical—it's fucking revolutionary.
The witch hunts never ended—they just evolved. The fight for bodily autonomy, LGBTQ+ rights, and freedom of knowledge is far from over. Support organizations working to dismantle oppression and protect those under attack. Every action, every voice, and every spell for justice matters. 🔮 Take Action Now to learn more, donate, and join the resistance.
Rise up, witches. They can't burn us all. ✨
Let’s not forget that every single Christian ritual and practice is of pagan rites. The Church decided that if they couldn’t kill them or beat them from their practices, the Church would join them by declaring the practice sacred under Church law.
Christ never asked, nor stated He was to be worshipped as God. The Church did that to radicalize their movement away from Roman rule and to justify their criminal acts to place fear into the minds of the People. Christ was the greatest Shaman to show us shamanic practices with direct source of self to The Divine. No governing ruling required.
To implement their control over the people and keep them illiterate, the Church installed Kings—which is a tactic being attempted today in our government.
Deleting a woman’s personhood and making her property of men is a Church thing implemented over 2300 years ago. That is alive today—still.
The removal of Priestesses in the temple was a Christian Church thing after Christ died, thus the removal of The Goddess.
The Book of Psalms was written by a Priestess over 4000 years ago to her Goddess, not by King Solomen.
I wrote a book on much of this in 2012 and am going to edit it and rename it soon. I am done with us “Witches,” those who are sorceresses of that which “civilized men” will never begin to grasp, being demonized and women being property for their use and pleasure at the expense of all.
I’m done with my rant now😉🤣💃💃
We are the daughters of the witches they COULDN’T burn!!
